We even wonder how much they spend to take care of their skin or how expensive are their make-ups to cover up some freckles. Is it really possible that not even a single pore will appear on a photo shot by a high resolution camera?

The truth behind their printed perfect beauty lies on Photoshop CS3. Let me share some simple photo retouching techniques I discovered.

Start your Photoshop CS3 and do the following instructions:

1.Open the photo you want to edit. Make sure that you can view the layers. If your picture is too big, you can resize it by going to Image then click Image size. Resize your photo onto whatever size you wanted.

2.Go to layer, right-click on background and select Duplicate Layer. You will edit the duplicated layer and retain the original.

3.To start smoothening the skin, use blur tool. Blur skin areas especially those with wrinkles, blemishes and pimples. If you’re satisfied with the result but the photo now appears to be pale, you can make it a little darker or put on tan complexion if you wished to.

4.Use burn tool to darken skin. If you select burn tool, you are given the options to choose from different brushes. It is advisable to use the soft-round brush with 300 px size.

5.To use the burn tool, smear it on areas that need to be darkened.

6.To add blending effects, duplicate the layer that you have done editing.

7.Go to the new duplicated layer then right-click. Choose blending options.

8.Select from the blending mode options that you want for your photo.

9.To see the difference between the original photo and the edited one, go to layers and click on the eye icon that indicates the visibility of each layer.
10.Do not forget to save your work.

After you finished retouching your photo and save it as JPEG file, you can now upload it on your Facebook and let all your friends see how you look. Photoshop CS3 is an efficient graphic manipulation to edit photos.

This path comes first to the cover panel at the back face of your design, and then towards the inner panels at the front face of your layout. Readers will of course read panels from top to bottom, completing one panel at a time from left to right. The reading path will end at the back face of the design in the center panel, which is basically the back part.

• The best places for images – There are a few ideal places where images are best placed. Of course, the cover e is where your main image must always be. Since this is the one to be seen first by readers, a big image at the top part of the cover panel is almost mandatory. When it comes to the inner panels though, you can pretty much place your images wherever you want. The only rule is to balance these locations out so that you do not have an area that is saturated with images, while another area is just a big block of text. Try to space the images evenly to have a nice balanced layout.

• Using templates to make it easier – If you still find it difficult to layout, I find it best to use a brochure template. A template will have the proper guidelines and layout reminders that should help you build a good layout without too much trouble. Moreover, most printers will appreciate the use of templates since they are very compatible with most of the software and machinery that they will be using. The only problem with using templates though is that you will be limiting your creativity to a certain extent.

• Ease of use – First, you should see if the template is easy to use. You can determine this from many factors, but the two main things you should look out for is the file format and customization.

- File format – The template must be in a file format you can use. Is it a text document file? An image file? A quark file? Be very careful with what you download so that you know you are getting the right one and not wasting your time. Also, do not try to convert the files into something else if you are not an expert. You will just be ruining it and it will just make things harder and longer for you.

- Customization – The design elements of the template should be easy to customize. You should be able to add your own content into the brochure instantly without having to move or change anything. Moreover, all other design elements should be easily moved so that you yourself can do what you like easily.

• Attractiveness – Next, we have attractiveness. Of course, you need a template that can be a good basis for an attractive brochure. If it has pre-set fonts and design elements it all should be attractive to your target market. So do not just pick things that are beautiful. Pick something that your readers should actually appreciate. Corporate brochures for example should have templates that are clean and professional looking while advertising brochures should be colorful and very “attention-grabbing”.

• Color Scheme – You should also mind the color scheme. Do not just use something that looks okay. It should have the colors that really represent the mood and nature of your content. If you are just delivering information, you can probably get away with black and white brochures. However, in advertising brochures it is good to have a color scheme that is perfect for the season. For example, Black and Orange is great for Halloween, Green and Red are good for Christmas and of course, Red and Pink are great for Valentine’s Day. Doing this should make your full color brochures more appealing.

• Image areas – It is also important that your template has appropriate image areas for your use. One big area should be reserved for your cover panel, while several smaller image areas should be within the inside panels. One or two small areas reserved for images should be fine. Since images are a vital part of brochure designs, you should really look out for this.

• Versatility – Finally, the template must be versatile. You should be able to use it for multiple projects and events. This means that the template should be easy enough to manipulate, changing text, and design elements with relative ease. In this regard, it is best NOT to use templates that are mere images. You will be better off with templates that are actual documents such as Text Documents, Photoshop PDD files or Quark files.

The types of communication materials requiring effective graphic design that would be classified as:

Websites, banner advertising and emailers would also involve graphic design but this type of design is somewhat different in its development process and the criterion required to produce effective communication materials are also different. This type of electronic graphic design is usually known as interactive media. It is a different subject altogether and I will focus on design for print in this article.

The development of effective graphic design work involves several stages, these would typically be:

• Briefing and identification of requirements
• Concept development
• Visuals including layout, images, colour selection copy and typography
• Development of visuals to finished artwork
• Print
• Campaign execution

The objective of graphic design is to influence customer behaviour patterns in a positive manner e.g. to influence them in purchasing decisions favourable to your own brand, products or services. Graphic design can achieve this by convincingly conveying the reasons why the consumer or business should make these decisions and carry out the necessary actions.

In order to influence customer decisions and deliver effective graphic design the stages to follow are:

1. Appoint the correct design agency in terms of cost and quality. The internet is now undoubtedly the best place to source quality, effective graphic design.
2. Give the design or agency the best brief you possibly can. Explain what you hope to achieve, what your target market is in terms of age, sex, social class or for a business to business project, company size, etc. Decide on your major sales points and convey these to the designers.

The process is most effective if the two work in harmony, the agency using its knowledge of marketing, the design process and customer behaviour and the client their knowledge of the particular market. Antagonism on either side is usually detrimental to the final result!

Once this process is complete you should have your effective graphic design work and the final stages are print and production, the roll out of the campaign and most importantly, the achievement of objectives.
