Applying Principle Of Design On Creating Websites
By: gomez
It was August 1991 when the first website was published by Tim Berners-Lee. He used HTML or hypertext mark-up language to create the website’s basic structure like heading, body, and ability to link. With Berner’s-Lee brilliant idea, technology has evolved web designing. Cascading Style Sheets or CSS enables to create table-based layout. Using different scripts, databases can now be integrated with websites. Websites are readily made accessible anytime as long as there’s internet connection. This characteristic made them widely used by business as marketing material. They allow companies to easily communicate their information to their audiences instead of faxing and snail mailing their profile and list of services. Websites also enables businesses to advertise their products online rather than paying a newspaper for a section or printing costly brochures and flyers that would soon be thrashed. Despite the techie structure of websites, it still follows the principles of design – balance, contrast, harmony, variety, and action. • In balance, objects must be properly placed to avoid clashing with each other. There are two types of balance, symmetrical and asymmetrical. If all objects are aligned in the center, it refers to symmetrical balance. If objects are placed on any part of the page, it pertains to asymmetrical. • Contrast is necessary to create interest in the design. It refers to the opposing element to an object. Contrast can be applied to size, weight, position, shape, and colors. • Harmony is essential so to unify all parts in the design. Shapes, tone, color and treatment must be related with each element. • Variety makes the design dynamic adding vigor to the viewers. • Action pertains to eye movement. The layout of design follows a sequence depending on the level of importance. This is the principle of design does not apply only in creating effective website design but in all forms of visual arts. Some designers tend to disregard this traditional knowledge of designing and merely relying alone to their experiences and intuition. Applying this principle of design will surely bring an impact to your audience. The design is your website’s fashion that can either lure or disappoint your audience. It always creates an impression so make sure you’re guided with principles while designing your site.
